We recently had the opportunity to interview Dr. John Itamura and learn more about his background and experiences using InSet™ Systems from Shoulder Innovations in his practice as an orthopedic surgeon. An edited version of our interview led by Dave Blue follows.

Thanks for joining us today. What were some of the things that attracted you to specialize in shoulders?
Dr. John Itamura
Sure. When I trained, shoulder arthroplasty was in its infancy. There were no reverse shoulder implants. It was anatomics and hemi’s. However, it was starting to be an exploding field, and at the time, there was very little competition in Los Angeles. So it was a good fit for me and an opportunity.

As you’ve watched shoulder arthroplasty evolve over the years, what was your initial impression of the InSet™ system and Shoulder Innovations?
Dr. John Itamura
I was comfortable with it, but like everything else, I had to see how it worked. At this point in my career, I usually don’t like to be a trailblazer. But, when I started seeing the lucency around the glenoid peg in another system, that got me concerned about its longevity. On the other hand, the biomechanics of the InSet™ system are truly impressive. And the InSet™ Plus Augmented Glenoid is a total game changer in my view.
I will say that one of the benefits of working with Shoulder Innovations is the ability to quickly devise solutions when a problem arises. This isn’t always the case with other companies. The speed at which SI moves – I don’t think I’ve ever seen things come together so quickly.
What sets Shoulder Innovations apart is more than great shoulder products, it’s the team. When you have a company with absolutely the best shoulder implant engineers on the planet, and an entire team that is passionate about being excellent in the shoulder space, a great product is a natural result. I think that’s key to the success for sure.
